THE Oshakati Town Council continues to make land available through various projects such as the Build Together Program, Shack Dweller Federation, and the relocation of informal settlement processes.
Town spokesperson Katarina Kamari said a total of 31 residential plots received title deeds on Wednesday.
According to Kamari, as part of the Council’s current strategic plan for the financial year 2022/2023 – 2026/2027, the Council places high strategic priority on creating as many residential erven mainly for ultra-low-income earners.
Hence, in 2018, the Council entered into a memorandum of understanding with a non-governmental organization named Development Workshop Namibia (DWN) with an agreement to co-service residential erven meant for ultra-low-income earners.
She indicated that Phase one of this project saw 118 Oshakati residents benefiting from acquiring plots with title deeds in Okandjengedi South, serviced with access roads, water reticulation, and electricity.
Thus far, Kamari said 51 beneficiaries have received their title deeds.
“Council is currently servicing 289 plots in Onawa for phase 2 of the project, which are intended for individuals with extremely low income,” she said.
She added that 31 beneficiaries have already paid for their plots in full. These plots are serviced with access roads and water reticulation, while electrical infrastructure is underway.
Kamari said the plot sizes range from 300 to 400 square meters and cost N$14,730. Beneficiaries have been given a period of 12 months to pay off their plots.
She said these beneficiaries comprise retail workers, taxi drivers, security officers, entrepreneurs (kapana vendors), etc., and have been selected from the Council’s waiting list.
“The allocation of these residential plots underscores the Council’s dedication to inclusivity and social equity, ensuring that even the most economically vulnerable members of the community have access to decent and affordable housing options,” she added.
She explained that by prioritizing ultra-low-income earners in this location process, the Council aims to uplift families and provide them with a pathway to homeownership and stability.
