SITUATED on the eastern side of Okongo is the revitalized Onehanga youth project, originally established to contribute to food security in the country.
The project’s inception dates back over 20 years when the Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) in Ohangwena was granted land at no cost by the late Headman of Onehanga Village, Fillipus Haukongo. The aim was to create an income generation and employment opportunity project.
The SPYL Ohangwena Branch subsequently handed over the land to the Ohangwena Regional Youth Forum to manage on its behalf. The forum initiated efforts to secure funding to kickstart the project.
However, after approximately 10 years of dormancy, Shenye Trading CC partnered with the Ohangwena Youth Forum to revive the project.
Okongo Constituency Councilor Efraim Shipindo expressed that most implements at the site have been non-operational during the project’s idle period. Shipindo highlighted that the project is meant for all youth in the Ohangwena Region, emphasizing its revival’s focus on ensuring food security and promoting youth employment.
“We have successfully repaired the borehole to supply water to people who are expected to stay at the centre,” he said. Shipindo added that they are progressing gradually and cannot disclose the full investment required to revive the entire project at this moment.
