Road fatalities decrease

THE number of people who died in road crashes from November 17, 2023, to January 1, 2024, decreased by 14 percent.

During the period under review, a total of 57 fatalities were reported, compared to 66 cases in 2022/23. According to the road statistics shared by the Namibian Police Force (NamPol), there is a 14% decrease in fatalities. While this may be a positive development, the overall road safety scenario remains a concern as crashes have increased by 5%, and injuries by 2%, during the reviewed period.

The document revealed that a total of 403 road crashes were reported during the 2022/23 period, compared to 382 crashes during the 2023/24 period, while 724 people were injured in road crashes, compared to 711 people in the previous period.

According to NamPol, the primary concern lies in the attitude and behaviour of drivers, with instances of unsafe overtaking and inadequate following distances being prevalent.

“Let’s prioritize responsible and cautious behaviour to ensure the well-being of everyone on the road, as this is a shared responsibility that extends to all road users, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, and those leading animals,” said the police.

The police then urge all road users to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic rules and regulations.

Furthermore, vulnerable road users (pedestrians and pedal cyclists) are reminded to enhance their visibility, especially at night, by wearing bright clothing. Crossing the road should only be done at designated and safe locations.

The Namibian Police Force emphasizes that every life lost is one too many. Thus, it remains committed to enhancing road safety through rigorous law enforcement and community awareness initiatives.

The police also urge everyone to play their part in making their roads safer for all.
