Planned Ndeitunga protest collapses in shame

Staff Reporter

THE Presidential appointment of the retired Inspector-General of the Namibian Police, Lt-Gen Sebastian Ndeitunga, as Ohangwena governor by Dr. Hage Geingob, received a massive vote of confidence when a planned protest at Eenhana collapsed embarrassingly.

In a massive blow to attempts of factionalism, only eight of the original 30 protestors, which included the congregation of two churches, turned up.

This followed after the organizers unsuccessfully roped in traditional media, various local and national radio- and TV-stations, as well as Facebook and Twitter, who also did not turn up to report for coverage of the aborted Eenhana protest.

A long-time resident remarked that he thought “it was people waiting for a taxi” and was surprised to hear that it was “the protest and boycott of Governor Ndeitunga.”

The widely advertised protest was scheduled to kick off at 10:00, but participants were urged to start assembling at 08:00. However, by 10:20 only eight people had shown up.

By 11:00, a strong police contingent that was tasked to escort the demonstrators left the scene and gave the organizers more time (till 12:00) to get ready.

However, 12:00 came and went, and the number of demonstrators was still not satisfactory to the organizers. Two-thirds of the initial 30 people who signed the request did not turn up for their own event.

Ndeitunga, who was the Inspector-General of the Namibian police until his retirement last year, was recently appointed by President Hage Geingob as the new regional governor of Ohangwena, replacing Walde Ndevashiya who held the position since 2020.

The failed protest was supposed to force President Geingob to reverse his decision.
