SYDNEY Skrywer, a 40-year-old resident of Windhoek who was accused of killing and burning his colleague earlier this year, allegedly took his own life on Tuesday afternoon while in custody.
According to officials, the incident occurred inside the Windhoek police station where Skrywer was being held during his pretrial.
Skrywer was arrested in April on suspicion of killing his co-worker Julio Alberto and disposing of his body in a river bed in Windhoek. He was denied bail at the Windhoek Magistrate Court and has been held in custody.
Alberto, aged 46, was reported missing on March 31, 2023, and his burned remains were discovered in a river bed in the Southern Industrial area on April 6, 2023. It is believed that he died as a result of being stabbed in the chest and sustaining cranial injuries.
According to the state, Skrywer allegedly murdered Alberto, who worked with him at a business outlet in the Southern Industrial area, and robbed him of his mobile phone before setting his lifeless body on fire.
Skrywer was denied bail due to concerns that he would flee or interfere with the investigation of his case. It was also deemed that his release on bail would not be in the interest of justice or the administration of justice, considering the strength of the case against him.
