Cabinet and NamPower butt heads over power cuts

Staff Reporter

IN a letter addressed to the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of NamPower, Daniel Motinga, Finance Minister Iipumbu Shiimi has requested the state-owned enterprise to halt its power suspension plan, which was implemented to recover over a billion in debt owed to NamPower by local authorities.

In the letter, Shiimi said that the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises has briefed Cabinet on the deteriorating debt situation of local authorities, as well as NamPower’s intention to impose power suspensions on defaulting local authorities.

“Accordingly, Cabinet has issued a directive for NamPower to put the planned power suspensions on hold, pending further consultations between the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises, Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, and local authorities,” Shiimi said.
