Boxing judges urged to be fair

WHEN Gotlieb Tyson from the Bulelo Boxing Academy was pronounced the winner at a boxing bonanza at Oshakati Saturday evening, many spectators were bewildered by the decision.

Tyson was up against Nangolo Josef from the Rainbow Boxing Academy.
The two boxers faced off in the 43-45kg category in Part 4 of the MTC-Kilimandjaro Youth Shall Grow Championship.

The general view among spectators was that an error was made and questioned “the kind of judgement procedures” employed to name a victor.

Tyson’s victory did not sit well with a number of boxing trainers who demanded fairness in boxing and urged judges to stop favouring boxers just because they know them or their club chiefs.

In order to develop fresh talent and empower upcoming boxers in the northern regions, there should be justice. Bad judges are destroying boxing.
