“I did it out of anger,” said Josef Shivute (51) who is accused of abusing his 15-year-old niece in the Onekaku village.
Shivute is accused of beating his niece and of subsequently chaining her to a tree.
He appeared before Magistrate Ivette-Levien Frederick’s and pleaded guilty, saying that he is aware of the weight the offense he committed, carries.
“My intention was to direct and discipline my niece,” he said.
When Magistrate Fredericks asked why the accused committed the offense, he said he was simply out of his mind.

Shivute, who is the victim’s guardian, admitted to being guilty of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm and child abuse read with the provision of Domestic Violence.
Magistrate Fredericks postponed the matter to 23 March 2023 for trial.
The accused is remanded in custody.
