THE Oshikoto Regional Athletics Championships, which is underway in Oshakati, had no medical health officials visible on the ground.

The paramedic team was only called hours later, after two learners collapsed. One of these learners had to be rushed to the Oshakati State Hospital for medical care.

The learner collapsed while on track for her 3 000m race (under 15), and it took about an hour before she could be attended to. The other learner collapsed during the 400m distance run.

Informanté understand that efforts to get health assistance from the Ministry of Health was done on a late request, thus no one was availed to attend to the learners on the ground.

Secretary of the Namibia School Sport Union (NSSU), Freida “Nelly” Uukunde, said that they have officials on the ground with basic first aid training that are stationed to help.

The games are being held to select 50 best athletes to form a regional team for the national games slated for 28 April 2023 in Windhoek.
