THE use of disposable items in health care is nothing new, however when these items are discarded at local dumpsites, they pose a threat to public health.
For this reason, the community from Omuthiya, in the Oshikoto Region have requested the town council to relocate the dumping site to a more secure and safe area, far from the residential and business districts of the town.
The request comes after medical disposable items were observed at the dumping site.
The residents are calling on the Town Council to find a permanent solution to the situation that constitutes a hazard and danger to people’s lives.
Residents penned a petition to the council saying that they are living in an unpleasant and disheartening environment where flies and garbage from the dumping site are swarming their houses and the whole area has become a breeding place for maggots.
The residents further complained that preparing food has also become a daunting task because of the amount of flies surrounding the area.
The petition further indicated that the garbage at the dumping site is emitting foul smells and unbearable smoke fumes whenever the garbage is burnt.
Approached for comment Town Mayor Johannes Ndeutepo said that he was not aware of the petition nor has he received anything.
