Oshakati fireman embarks on firefighting awareness campaign

IT is mandatory for every person to have a basic understanding of firefighting and first aid, according to Jombi Matheus, a local fireman at the Oshakati Town Council.

Upon receiving his appointment as a fireman for Oshakati, Matheus saw the need to educate the public about firefighting and first aid as it’s a basic need for every person.

On Thursday, Matheus spent his morning hours with third year students at the University of Namibia (UNAM) in Oshakati, educating them on fire safety and how best to prevent a fire from spreading if it ever occurred.

Matheus stated that they have been giving public awareness to learners, students and members of the public around Oshakati as part of their awareness campaign.

He stated that their target is to train the whole inhabitants of Oshakati on how best to fight fire if it occurs in their surroundings.

“So far, we have trained all schools within the town and about 100 community members,” he said.

He stated that training started last year and they do not plan to stop offering the training to the people anytime.

He emphasised that as a registered firefighting instructor, giving back to society gives hope to many knowing that he’s making an impact in the lives of many people.
