KING Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo of the Ondonga Traditional Authority has exhorted his people to go back to their roots and teach the youth about their culture rather than following the western way of life.

Nangolo who was speaking during the Commemoration of the World Tourism Day held at Omuthiya on Tuesday, reminded people that misfortune befalls those who have lost and forgotten their culture.

He stated that culture can be developed as a tourism product to benefit people. “Livestock and crops are not enough,” he said.

He added: “We need to go back to our roots, sit down with our children and record and preserve our history for future generations,” he said.
He urged parents to stop excusing the mischievous behaviour of their children but rather put them back on the right track.

Further, Nangolo indicated that many of the people bring misfortune upon themselves as they no longer seek the blessings and advice from elders as is customary.

World Tourism Day celebrates the value and importance of tourism to the society and the economy.

It offers a unique opportunity for all of the people to come together to learn more, appreciate, promote tourism and its contribution to the national economy and the well-being of the Namibian people.

The commemoration at Oluthiya kicked off with a street parade from the open market to the town’s sports field.
