Silver Star (FC) was crowned the champions of the first-ever Mix Annual Soccer Tournament, which ended at Mix settlement in Windhoek on Sunday.
Silver Star won the tournament after beating EYC FC 4-1 on penalties in the final encounter.
As the champions, Silver Star scooped a top prize of a floating trophy, gold medals and N$5 000, while EYC FC as the runner-up, received silver medals and N$3 200.
Kiinge FC and Rio Junior FC as the third and fourth winners each received bronze medals and N$1 800.
A total of 16 teams participated in the tournament, which kicked off on Saturday and concluded on Sunday.
The aim of the tournament is to encourage people to use this social event to get together, build life-long friendships and to get to know each other.
The tournament coordinator, Petrus Hamukwaya, who hails from The WaBantu Events, said that the event attracted close to 600 football fans from within and nearby.
Hamukwaya stated that the event has also created a platform for the traders to make a little income for themselves and network with other local business people.
“The majority of the inhabitants are financially excluded and not adequately exposed to developmental opportunities, services, proper mentorship, corporate exposure and training, hence, the idea of the tournament,” he said.
He indicated that they aim to bring sport development in the area, thus the tournament will be held again next year in September.
Hamukwaya also thanked the community members for ensuring that the tournament was held in a peaceful and orderly way.
