AFTER concluding his working visit to Qatar for the second Qatar Economic Forum and bilateral talks with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, President Hage Geingob travelled to Rwanda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2022 where global issues and Commonwealth priorities will be addressed.

President Hage Geingob is leading the Namibian delegation at the event held in Kigali from 20 to 25 June under the theme “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating and transforming”.

The President is accompanied by First Lady Monica Geingos and cabinet ministers.

Leaders from 54 countries will gather at the week-long summit expected to attract over 5 000 participants from government, business, and civil society.

Decisions taken at CHOGM will also guide the work programme of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The official opening of CHOGM takes place on Friday 24 June and is followed by the main high-level meetings of Heads from Friday 24 to Saturday 25 June.

CHOGM 2022 was originally due to take place in 2020 but has twice been postponed due to Covid-19. The last country to host CHOGM in 2018 was the UK and the host country for CHOGM 2024 will be announced at this week’s summit.

This is the sixth time the event has been hosted by an African country.
