Swakopmund-Walvis road covered after sandstorm

AFTER an extremely windy week, especially for the country’s coastal towns, the B2 road between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay is covered in substantial heaps of sand, which is potentially making road usage difficult.

West Coast Safety Initiative Namibia shared a photo of the road on Facebook and it quickly gained the attention of many users, who not only shared the photo with others but also expressed their astonishment in the comment section – with one user dubbing the sand piles as “nature’s speed bumps”, while another referred to the sand as “dunes in the middle of the road”.

“I lived there for a long time but never seen it this bad. My brother still lives there and he told me about the terrible winds that are blowing now,” another user commented.

The heavy sandstorms come after Namibia Meteorological Services warned that this week might be warm to hot and exceptionally windy for coastal towns. This warning is still valid for the rest of the week as Namibia Meteorological Services predicted that the east wind conditions will persist in the Namib and coastal towns – accompanied by warm temperatures and sandstorms – throughout the week.

Walvis Bay, in particular, is expected to be quite windy and hot, with minimum temperatures ranging between 19⁰C to 22⁰C and maximum temperatures ranging between 32⁰C and 35⁰C from Wednesday to Saturday.

Namibia Meteorological Services also predicted that it will most likely be windy across the interior of the country as well. However, in contrast to the coastal towns, Namibia Meteorological Services explained that frost might occur in the South-Eastern, Central and Eastern parts of the country on Thursday morning.

This is further highlighted by the prediction that places such as Buitepos and Gobabis, in the Omaheke region, are likely to experience minimum temperatures of 1⁰C and maximum temperatures of 23⁰C.

Further south, Namibia Meteorological Services predicted that Aranos, in the Hardap region, is expected to experience a minimum temperature of 0⁰C and a maximum temperature of 22⁰C on Thursday.

In the //Kharas region, Aus and Aroab are expected to experience minimum temperatures of 1⁰C and 5⁰C respectively and maximum temperatures of 18⁰C and 20⁰C respectively.

The rest of the South, specifically Mariental, Maltahöhe, Noordoewer, Keetmanshoop, !Nami#nus and Oranjemund, are expected to be warm on Thursday, with minimum and maximum temperatures predicted to be above 6⁰C and 22⁰C respectively.
