POLICE in the Oshikoto region continue to make breakthroughs where people are busted for illicit products.
Of recent, police in Tsumeb town on Saturday confiscated illicit goods worth N$173 600 from a house in Soweto. The intercepted products include illicit alcohol and cigarettes.
Oshikoto police commander Commissioner Armas Shivute said these prohibited products are mostly transported in trucks, public or private transport, as well as vehicles belonging to courier companies.
Shivute said they received a tip-off from the community that a blue Toyota “Dankie Botswana” was busy offloading illegal whiskey in Soweto and the car is parked at the gate.
“Upon the arrival of the members of the police, they spotted the said vehicle in the yard with an open boot,” he said.
Shivute said the police confiscated 13 boxes of Best Whiskey containing 72 packs in each box and 16 boxes of Yes cigarettes with 5 000 cigarettes in each box smuggled into the country from Angola.
Shivute said the 28-year-old suspect has been arrested and is expected to appear before court this week.
A case of possession of illicit goods according to Customs and Exercise Act 20/1998 was registered.
