THE death of a two-month-old baby girl from Gobabis is one of the latest, and perhaps most devastating, Covid-19 deaths that occurred during the last week.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services stated that the two-month-old passed away on 23 March. Her death, the death of an unvaccinated 62-year-old man from the Omuthiya District and the death of an unvaccinated 36-year-old woman from Keetmanshoop were reported during the week, against the backdrop of declining Covid-19 cases.
According to the Ministry’s latest Covid-19 update, there are 167 active Covid-19 cases in the country. Of these, six are hospitalised and one is in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The person in the ICU and five of the six hospitalisations are unvaccinated.
Seven new positive cases out of 619 results were also reported in the latest Covid-19 update, translating to a 1,1% positivity ratio.
Of the new infections, two are from the Oshana region.
The Khomas region, which recorded 17 new cases from 21 March to 26 March, leads in terms of the total number of new cases reported over the last week.
Khomas also leads in terms of recoveries as 23 new recoveries were reported.
This brings the total number of recoveries to 155 507 as of 26 March, which represents a 97,4% recovery rate.
Despite this, and the declining case numbers, it is clear that Covid-19 still remains a threat to public health, particularly for those who are unvaccinated.
As of 26 March, 386 021 people have been fully vaccinated in the country. This represents 22% of the target population of 1 779 271.
