OKONGO constituency councillor Lebeus Efraim Shipindo has urged the youth to unite in addressing food security and creating employment.
He said young people should stop wasting their weekends by spending hours at shebeens and cuca shops but rather make something productive out of the weekend.
Shipindo made the remarks during a visit by Ohangwena Regional Swapo Party Youth League members recently.
The visit was aimed at mentorship and strong mobilizations in sections, branches and districts, as well as on regional level to ensure that peace and stability are maintained countrywide.
Shipindo urged the youth to take part in agricultural activities to ensure food security countrywide.
“As leaders, we should not only speak of food security in the mouth but lead by example by taking the first step at ensuring that we work in our fields or garden,” he said.
The agriculture sector remains central to the lives of the majority of the population.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), agriculture contributes 70% of food production in Namibia, benefiting Namibians indirectly and directly.
FAO said although the food and nutrition security situation has improved considerably in the last decade since Independence, it remains Government’s priority to ensure food security is achieved in the country.
Shipindo said the time to ensure food security is now, not only in the Ohangwena Region but the country at large.
