Slippery suspect escapes from custody twice

THERE was high drama at the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Friday when 31-year-old Mathews Thomas ran away the moment he was dropped off for his first appearance on charges of theft, escaping from lawful custody for the second time in a week.

Thomas was first arrested for theft but escaped from police custody and was rearrested sometime later.

According to people who were at the court, Thomas escaped at the time local businessman Sindano Hango was heading to the Regional Court for his sentencing.

Thomas is believed to have escaped through the rooftop and jumped the court walls before hiking a taxi as a getaway.

According to Community Affairs Officer Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, a manhunt has been launched by Nampol to find the suspect.

“Thomas escaped from police custody sometime last week and was re-arrested. He then escaped again on Friday whilst on his way for the court hearing,” said Aiyambo.

Thomas is of slender build, medium height and has a dark complexion.

The Namibian police are asking for public assistance to help trace Thomas.

“Anybody with information that will lead to the apprehending of Thomas is requested to report to the nearest police station,” said Aiyambo.

It is still unknown where Thomas originally comes from and there are no photos of him.
