THE lifeless body of a baby girl identified as Mbatenga Mbepera aged one year and ten months was discovered in a river near Omaruru.
According to the Erongo police, the unnatural death incident occurred between Thursday at about 08:00 and Friday at about 13:00 in a river approximately two kilometres from Omaruru Municipality Plot.
Chief Inspector Ileni Shapumba said that the mother of the deceased baby, Linda Tjiuana, took her children to the Omaruru Hospital for immunization, leaving her baby girl with family members at Omaruru Municipality Plot, about 12 km from the town. She spent the night in Omaruru.
It is further alleged that on Friday she received a message from one of the family members informing her that her baby, who would have turned two on 23 March, was missing since Thursday.
She reported the matter to the police in Omaruru and the search was immediately conducted in the vicinity of Omaruru Municipality Plot from where the child went missing.
Sadly, her lifeless body was discovered in a river, approximately two kilometres away from the plot.
The victim’s body was taken to the Omaruru State Hospital.
Next of kin were informed and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Police investigation continues.
