Staff of Gondwana Namibia’s Canyon Lodge and iconic Canyon Roadhouse are still struggling to free two vehicles from debris and mud after it was trapped in a flash flood in one of the most bizarre incidences of a conspiracy of fate and the unpredictability of Namibia’s forces of nature a few hours ago.
The two vehicles were trapped in the Löwen river by rushing water of the Naute Dam, a mere 20km away, when its sluices were opened at 12:00 to regulate pressure on the over full dam outside of Keetmanshoop. All passengers are reported to be safe and sound after the incident.
A spokesperson of Gondwana confirmed that a group of tourists were travelling with Namibia2Go rental vehicles between Seeheim and the landmark Canyon Roadhouse. They took a shortcut through the Löwen river when they got stuck in wet sand.
Typical of legendary Namibian hospitality, a tow-in service rushed to the aid of the stuck tourists. Unbeknown to them, a wall of water and even worse luck was speeding towards them and soon both vehicles were submerged by the raging torrent.
The tourists were taken to Gondwana Canyon Lodge, while workers are still trying to get the two vehicles out of the sand and silt.
