Shannon Wasserfall murder: Madisia’s confession letter inadmissible

Zorena Jantze

INSPECTOR Ileni Shapumba of the Erongo Police has stated that a recent letter written by Azaan Madisia in which she confessed to “accidentally” killing Shannon Wasserfall is inadmissible to police.

Madisia alongside her younger brother Steven Mulundu is accused of murdering Shannon and burying her body in a shallow grave in the dunes in Walvis Bay.

In the letter, Madisia outlined the circumstances behind the death of Shannon and described that she killed her in self-defence during an intense argument after a drinking spree.

The incarcerated Madisia addressed the so-called confessional letter to Petrus Shoopala, the father of the late Shannon’s child, and with whom Madisia is said to also have had a love affair.

Family members of Shannon have since come out condemning the letter, adding that this is a dubious attempt by Madisia to plead self-defence.

They have also raised concerns that there may be insiders at the Narraville police station helping Madisia spread information that may jeopardise police investigations.

Inspector Shapumba has, however, said that the police were unaware of the existence of such a letter until it was leaked to the media.

“Information in the leaked letter was addressed to a particular person and not the Namibian police.

“To us, this letter is a non-issue and inadmissible. There is a legal way in which confessions are handled by the police. We have our own evidence, and we have analyzed how this letter correlates to it.

“I would say that this is just a simple tactic by the accused to divert and jeopardise the investigation,” Shapumba said.

The two siblings to date have both pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Enraged family members have also come out bashing Madisia’s remorse-filled confessional letter.

One such family member is Dennis Wasserfall, the uncle of Shannon.

“Azaan is trying to convince the nation that it was self-defence when we all know it was not self-defence. This was clearly premeditated and all of Azaan’s tactics are outrageous,” Dennis wrote.

He further accused someone in the Narraville police station of helping the suspect disseminate information that may jeopardize the investigation.

“Is there someone at the Narraville Police Station helping the suspects? Because this is not the first problem. Not too long ago, Azaan was getting her hair braided before every court appearance. Who’s helping them and why is it being condoned? This is too much of a sensitive case for people not to take it seriously. How did Azaan distribute this letter to Shoopala without any authorities knowing?” Dennis queried.

Inspector Shapumba, however, denied any such allegations of an insider helping Madisia and asked family members to assist with naming any such individual.

“We are investigating how the letter ended up in the hands of the media and we will bring to light what really transpired in this case,” Shapumba said.
