THE Namibian police has arrested two suspects who were found in possession of twelve suspectedly stolen head of cattle.
The two were arrested Tuesday and are expected to appear in the Oshakati Magistrate’s court today.
The suspects, who are ages 40 and 44, allegedly tried to bribe the law enforcement officers, offering N$4 000 in cash.
The bribe money was confiscated, additional bribery charges added, and the animals impounded and are now kept in temporary custody of a resident of the Onanime village on the outskirts of Oshakati.
According to the police, veterinary officials were roped in because of the suspicion that the cattle might have originated from southern Angola, where no animal disease control mechanisms exist and where livestock is largely unvaccinated.
The police said that the impounded cattle do not have eartags and are not branded, but have the traditional ear marks.
The suspects only furnished suspicious-looking documents, allegedly from Angola, as proof of ownership.
The total value of the twelve head of cattle is estimated at N$96 000.
