Oxygen shortage at Oshakati hospital

Oxygen shortage at Oshakati hospital

Maria David

OSHAKATI State hospital is running low on oxygen supply due to the high demand of COVID-19 patients that requires critical care.
So far, the hospital’s theatre and COVID ward are the only units that have been affected by the low oxygen supply.

Oshana Regional Health Director, Johanna Haimene, said that the oxygen supply is running because of an ever-increasing number of patients being admitted to the hospital.

Haimene stated that the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit is the only department not seriously affected by the oxygen shortage.

“We are faced with too many people that need to be put on oxygen supply,” she said.

Haimene indicated that measures are currently being put in place to ensure that the available oxygen supply is not wasted. Some of the measures include extending surgery dates and prioritizing emergency cases.

Haimene pointed out that an increased number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients from the region require oxygen supply because these people find it difficult to breathe on their own.
