Rivers of locusts

Staff Reporter

LOCUSTS in their millions are migrating in areas where only a few short weeks ago, rivers of water flowed over roads in southern Namibia. A motorist near Airamsvlei made a video clip of a ‘river’ of young locusts walking across the road. The locusts are currently in the nymph or so-called walker stage of their life cycle which means they cannot fly yet.

The insects are destroying huge swaths of grazing that shot up after the good rains in the south earlier this year.
