THE 46-year-old Abner Iyambo Petrus died after he was trampled by elephants at Okatha-Kiikombo Village in the Okatseidhi area on Saturday.
The deceased person’s body was, however, only discovered on Sunday by members of the community and it is believed that the animals dragged him away from where he lived.
Omusati Regional Commander, Commissioner Titus Shikongo, said the deceased, together with his wife and daughter was trying to chase away a herd of elephants that invaded his mahangu field.
“It is alleged that the man and his family members managed to drive the animals out of the field and after they tried to chase them further away into the bushes. In the process one elephant allegedly emerged from behind and attacked the man,” he said.
Shikongo indicated that the deceased daughter and wife managed to escape and reported the incident to other villagers, but efforts to locate the man’s body on Saturday evening were unsuccessful.
He said that nature conservation officials attended the scene and that they are in consultation with the family.
Commissioner Shikongo noted that an inquest docket was registered at the Tsandi Police Station. He added that the man’s body was transported to the Okahao Police Mortuary where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the actual cause of his death.
