A FIRE destroyed an outbuilding at the Rehoboth High School despite the sincere efforts of the Rehoboth Fire Brigade and members of the community.
The blaze in the storeroom that was filled with books and desks, raged for at least four hours before it was brought under control.
An eyewitness to the incident said that the water pressure in the fire hydrants was very low which made the task of the Fire Brigade that much more difficult.
Members of the community pitched in by carrying buckets of water to the site to help extinguish the fire. Another group of volunteers used privately owned fire fighting equipment that is towed behind a bakkie to fight the blaze.
Another member of the community, Vinzanzo Forbes said that volunteers from the community had to refill the tank of the mobile fire fighting trailer several times before they managed to extinguish the flames.
“We, along with the Fire Brigade, managed to extinguish all the flames eventually, and then we had to spend another hour or two making sure that the fire did not flare up again,” Forbes said.
According to Forbes, no injuries or deaths occurred during the blaze.
The volunteer firefighter added that the blocks of classrooms at the school were not damaged by the fire.
