THE rerun of last year’s Regional Council and Local Authorities Elections in Mariental, Koës, Aroab, and Stampriet will take place on 26 February 2021.
The election in Mariental will be held to elect a representative of the rural constituency on the Hardap Regional Council while the elections in the three smaller towns will be to elect representatives for the local various authorities.
The Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Theo Mujoro, said in a statement that the logistical preparations for holding the elections are on course.
He said Desmond Dawid Tjipanga will contest as an independent candidate while the Landless People’s Movement (LPM), the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), and Swapo will contest in the Mariental election rerun.
The LPM Namibian Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF), Pdm, and Swapo will participate in the Aroab election rerun.
In Koës the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), LPM, PDM, and Swapo will contest in the rerun of the election.
The LPM, PDM, and Swapo will contest in the rerun of the local authority election in Stampriet.
According to the Mujoro, 21 voting stations will be used for the election. Of that number nine will be fixed and 12 will be mobile.
Mujoro also indicated that polling officials have already been recruited and that training of these officials will commence on the 20th of February.
In the meantime, the dispatching of election materials to the regions will be dispatched on the 19th of February, and that all equipment and material will be placed with the Namibian Police for safekeeping until the elections are completed.
He said that the ECN has already started with voter education in the various localities to ensure that voters are fully aware of all processes and procedures of the electoral process.
