A RAPE victim was kept overnight at the Ruacana police station for her safety after her former boyfriend and rape accused escaped from police custody on Monday.
The 24-year-old suspect, who is an Angolan national, worked as a domestic worker at a cattle post at Omifitu wa Kamboola in the Ruacana Constituency and was Monday arrested for rape, read with the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act.
A case of escape from lawful custody was also opened against him following his escape hours after his arrest.
Omusati Regional Commander Commissioner Titus Shikongo, said the suspect last week Friday at the Otjorute village raped his former girlfriend and mother of his child.
“It is alleged that the suspect went to her house, entered her sleeping room with a panga, tied her hands behind her back with a cloth, put a cloth in her mouth and had sexual intercourse with her without consent,” said Shikongo.
Shikongo added that after the rape incident, the suspect used the panga to threaten the victim and slapped her several times on her face.
The police opted to keep the young mother at the police station to keep a close eye on her as there are fears that the perpetrator will try and get revenge on her while on the run.
