Sossusvlei receives water

Sossusvlei receives water

Niël Terblanché

THE amount of rain that fell over Namibia over the past two weeks can hardly be measured but when the Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert receives inflow from the Tsauchab River the conclusion could only be that it is a lot. Rivers all over Namibia have been flooding sporadically since the good rains started. Photographs taken from an aircraft flying over the Sossusvlei show the spectacle of water flowing between the highest sand dunes before it disappears into the desert floor. Water from Sossusvlei supplies freshwater fountains near Meob Bay further to the west which enabled miners to build a small settlement to prospect for diamonds at the start of the previous century.
