Kuiseb River reaches the desert

Kuiseb River reaches the desert

Niël Terblanché

SUSTAINED rain showers in the Khomas Hochland to the west of Windhoek have seen the Kuiseb River flooding repeatedly over the past few days. Last week the river reached the bridge in the Kuiseb Canyon below the highland. Additional rain gave the flood down the river new momentum and by Wednesday the water reached Swartbank about 30 kilometres to the northwest of the Gobabeb Research facility in the Namib Desert. The river has however petered out before the water reached Rooibank outside Walvis Bay but with more rain expected it might very well reach the upper reaches of the Kuiseb Delta behind the dunes in a few more days.
