THE Oshana police is searching for a man who swindled an elderly man in Ongwediva out of close to N$100,000 after pretending to be a police officer investigating an illegal diamond deal.
Community Affairs Officer Warrant Frieda Shikole said a case of theft under false pretences was opened after the suspect convinced the 60-year-old man to deposit money into his bank account to avoid arrest after claiming to be a certain Warrant Officer Kamati.’
Shikole stated that the elderly man, who is from Uumbenge village, was approached by the self declared police officer while at the bank.
“He was allegedly told that he was involved in an illegal diamond deal and he will be arrested, unless he pays him. As a result, the victim deposited N$99 000 into the account of the so-called police officer for his freedom,” she said.
Shikole indicated that no arrest has yet been made and that police investigations into the matter continue.
