A 54-year-old woman, who was driving an ambulance of the Ministry of Health and Social Services, died on the scene of an accident between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo.

According to Chief Inspector Fillepus Haikali, the acting Otjozondjupa Region Crime Investigations Coordinator, the fatal crash occurred at about 08:40 on Saturday morning.

“The lady that was driving the ambulance was on her way from Okahandja to Otjiwarongo and was busy overtaking a slow-moving truck when she lost control over the vehicle. The vehicle left the road and overturned,” he said.

Chief Inspector Haikali said a registered nurse that was also travelling with the ambulance was injured as a result of the vehicle rolling over several times before coming to stand still on its side quite some distance from the road.

He said the ambulance is from the Onandjokwe hospital.

“The driver and nurse travelled to Windhoek on Friday to drop off a patient at one of the big state hospitals in the city. The crash occurred while they were travelling back to the North,” he said.

Chief Inspector Haikali said the injured nurse was transported to the hospital in Okahandja for emergency medical treatment and added that she is currently in a stable condition.

“The name of the deceased person will be made available once her next of kin has been informed of her death,” he said.

He said the actual cause of the accident is still under investigation.
