Bank Windhoek manager embroiled in racism saga

Eba Kandovazu

THE Head of Sales at Bank Windhoek, Riaan van Rooyen, has been suspended over a racist post he shared on his Facebook account in which he compared protesting black South African students to monkeys.

In the now deleted post, van Rooyen insinuated that the protesting youths have “exactly the same manners, IQ and discipline” as monkeys.

The bank, in a statement today said that van Rooyen’s post does not reflect the opinion of the bank, and that the bank therefore distances itself from his opinions.

The statement also said that van Rooyen’s suspension is with immediate effect and that the matter will be dealt with in accordance with the bank’s internal disciplinary and ethics policy.

“The post does not reflect the opinion of Bank Windhoek in any way but is the personal opinion of the individual concerned. The bank distances itself from the sentiments expressed by the individual. Bank Windhoek does not condone racism as it goes against our values and core ethics,” the statement reads.
