SCREAMS for help in the early hours of Sunday morning alerted family and neighbours to a shack fire in which the 34-year-old Basilius Mbambo was burned beyond recognition.
Mbambo, a security guard from Swakopmund, died while trapped inside a shack that was destroyed by fire in the DRC informal settlement.
Erongo Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, said Mbambo’s cousin, who lives next door, was alerted by someone screaming for help around 03:00 this morning.
“When he ran outside, he saw his cousin’s shack already in flames, but by then it was too late for him to do anything. The deceased person was one of two men who lived in the shack. The deceased person was unfortunately trapped inside and was burned beyond recognition,” Iikuyu said.
Mbambo was an employee of the G-Bullet Security Company in Swakopmund.
Mbambo’s housemate, the 22-year-old Likuwa Nicodemus, managed to escape to safety but in the process sustained third-degree burns on his arms and face.
According to Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu, Nicodemus was transported to the Swakopmund State Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
He said the cause of the fatal shack fire is still under investigation.
In a similar incident that occurred in Otjimbingwe on Saturday afternoon, a shack at the settlement was destroyed with all the family’s worldly possession by a fire.
According to Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu, the shack belonged to Ingrid Naruses, who was away from home at the time of the incident.
A relative of Naruses told police that the electricity box inside the shack was giving problems, and that it is suspected that a short circuit might have been the cause of the fire.
