Remain in line to register

Niël Terblanché

PROSPECTIVE voters that are in line at registration points by 19:00 will still be allowed to register for the upcoming Regional Council and Local Authority elections.

Over the past eight days, more than 34 000 new voters were registered while more than 62 000 reported to registration points to amend the personal information on their voters’ cards.

The majority of the eligible voters visited registration points over the past eight days to update their addresses and to replace lost voters’ cards.

In a statement, the Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Theo Mujoro, expressed his satisfaction with the numbers captured during the latest round of supplementary voters’ registration despite some delays that were experienced due to technical issues.

“We are happy with the way the public has responded given the relatively long queues observed especially in the urban centres across all 14 regions. We applaud the electorate for heeding our call to visit voter registration venues in order to participate in this very important democratic process,” Mujoro said.

The Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer stated that a provisional voters’ registration register will be placed at strategic places in all constituencies and local authorities from the 30th of September to the 5th of October 2020.

“We urge all interested persons to make use of this opportunity to inspect such registers with a view to lodging objections against names of persons that they have reason to believe, were registered unlawfully,” he said.

Mujoro also urged eligible Namibians who are not yet registered to visit registration points before the conclusion of the supplementary voters’ registration process.

He gave the assurance that registration teams will attend to all eligible persons already in the queues before all the registration points close at 19:00.
