A SOLDIER in Rundu is facing charges of failing to safeguard a firearm and the negligent loss of a firearm after his AK-47 assault rifle was stolen from his vehicle.

According to the incident report provided by the Public Relations Division of the Namibian Police, the theft of the assault rifle occurred at about 20:30 at Gino’s Restaurant.

“It is alleged that a suspect that still has to be identified broke into the soldier’s vehicle with an unknown object before fleeing the scene of the crime with the looted assault rifle and a fully loaded 30 round magazine. The AK-47 and the ammunition is the property of the Namibian Government.

No arrest has been made and officials from both the Namibian Police and the Namibian Defence Force are investigating the theft and hope to make an arrest soon.
