THE 15-year-old Clemensia Piki-Piki Uiras, who was reported missing from her home in Otjiwarongo almost three weeks ago, was found alive and doing well in Windhoek earlier this week.
According to one of the police officers investigating the matter the girl, who was last seen by her family on 21 October, left her home with the purpose to travel to Windhoek instead of going to school.
“When Uiras arrived in Windhoek she reported to the Woman and Child Protection Unit of the Namibian Police where she told the social workers that she needed a place to stay. Girls like her are accommodated in a special shelter and that is where she was this entire time,” the officer said.
He said that because of the confidentiality agreement between the social workers and the the woman and children in their care the police were not allowed to find out what story she told to the officials to be allowed to stay in the shelter along with other vulnerable children for more than two weeks.
According to the officer it was only after the picture and the missing person report was published in the media that the Woman and Child Protection Unit in Windhoek notified the investigating officers that she was safe and staying in the shelter with them.
The officer said that Clemensia has in the meantime been safely returned to the care of her family in Otjiwarongo.
