Police officer arrested for corruption has similar charges pending

SERGEANT Fillemon Garuseb, the member of the Namibian Police that was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) after allegedly accepting a bribe of N$4 000 from a overland truck driver over the weekend was remanded in custody after it was discovered that he has a similar charge still pending against him.


The current offence was committed while the accused person was free on bail of N$2 000 after he was arrested on charges of corruption after he received a bribe from another victim a while ago.


According to a statement issued by the ACC, Sergeant Garuseb allegedly solicited the bribe from the truck driver after inspecting his vehicle at the Rehoboth roadblock. The officer detected that the licence disc and the operation disc displayed on the wind screen of the truck appeared to be counterfeited.

Following the report to the Commission, a sting operation was launched and Sergeant Garuseb, was arrested after he received the bribe.


The accused person appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate Court on Monday, 21 October 2019. He was denied bail and his case was postponed to 19 November 2019, for further investigation and legal representation.


At the court appearance it was disclosed that Garuseb has a similar case pending against him in which he was charged for contravening section 43(1) read with sections 46, 49 and 51 of the Anti-Corruption Act, 2003 (Act No. 8 of 2003) after he received a bribe of N$1 000 while he was busy executing his duties at the same roadblock.


According to the ACC the previous matter was postponed to 26 November 2019 for purposes of plea and trial.


Up until his latest arrest Sergeant Garuseb was serving at the Katutura Police Station.
