Angolan police shoots suspected fuel smuggler

A SUSPECTED fuel smuggler from Namibia was shot and severely wounded by members of the Angolan police after he refused to stop his vehicle and drove through a police checkpoint north of the border between the two countries.

Warrant Officer Abner Itumba, spokesperson for the Namibian Police in the Ohangwena Region, said the 27-year-old man and a friend of his were on their way back over the border with Angola when they were suddenly accosted by police officers.

“What the men did Angola is not exactly clear but it is suspected that they went over the border to buy fuel to bring back to Namibia to sell. Instead of stopping at the checkpoint the men attempted to drive away and one of them was wounded after two shots hit him in the head. The bullets hit the man in his face and damaged his upper jaw.”

Once back on Namibian soil after the shooting incident the victim was taken by a taxi to Ongenga Police Station for the issuance of J88 form.

According to Warrant Officer Itumba people go to Police Stations to request J88 forms to avoid a situation where too many questions are asked by the medical personnel. Victims of assault or attempted murder are required to have a doctor complete a J88 form on their behalf in order for them to register a case with the Namibian Police.

“If people, especially those who have sustained serious wounds like what happened in this case, go to hospitals for medical help, the medical personnel contact the police immediately. If, however, people go to hospital with a J88 form, it is assumed that the victim is about to register a case with the police and is not reported to the authorities,” he said.

He said the victim was admitted to the Engela hospital but was immediately taken to the Oshakati State hospital where he is currently in a stable condition.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening at about 20:00 in the area of the Eenghoshi Village in the Ongenga constituency.
