THE town of Gobabis held its first ever basketball tournament over the weekend at the Wennie Du Plessis basketball courts, where 12 school teams competed in a youth development basketball tourney.

The event was hosted by Gobabis Youth Development Academy, in collaboration with Namibian Basketball Federation, to provide youth participating in GYDA’s basketball program with a chance to compete in a local tournament. This was the first of its kind in Omaheke as the region has never had a basketball tournament before this Saturday.

Graham Robyn, Interim President of GYDA, said that “being that it was the first ever basketball tournament that Gobabis has ever had, we are excited to see a platform building for basketball to spread throughout our region and Namibia.”

Gobabis Youth Development Academy is a volunteer youth organisation that provides afterschool programs to all school-age youth living in Gobabis, employing the Sports for Development and Basketball4Life methodologies with academic support to provide learners with guidance toward a brighter future. GYDA, along with local partners and NBF, plan to spread a culture of basketball throughout Namibia, and all the invaluable life lessons that come with it.
