Abner Shikongo was on Tuesday sworn in as the new Oshana Regional Councillor for the Oshakati East Constituency, following the conclusion of a by-election held last month.
Oshakati East Constituency has been without a councillor since May, following the death of the former councillor Lotto Kuushomwa.
Local magistrate, Antonius Shapumba, presided over the swearing in ceremony.
Shikongo, a Swapo candidate, was declared as a winner during the August by-election with 2 935 votes, followed by an independent candidate, Fiina Kuutondokwa, with 234 votes, while Theofelus Kamati of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) was in the third position with 185 votes.
He was followed by Festus Shaduva of the Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) with 32 votes in the fourth place. Meanwhile Elias Iiyambo of the Congress of Democrats (CoD) and Rebekka Kambayi of Swanu attained 17 and 10 votes, respectively.
Out of the 18 000 registered potential voters, only 3 413 cast their votes at 21 polling stations throughout the constituency.
During the time, Oshana regional councillor for Uuvudhiya Constituency, Seblon Amutenya Ndahafa was also sworn-in as member of the management committee of the Oshana Regional Council, taking over from Elia Irimari, who has been appointed the governor of the region in March.
Oshana Regional Councillor for the Okaku Constituency, Gerson Kapenda is the chairperson, while other members of management committee are Andreas Utoni (Ongwediva Constituency) and Adolf Uunona (Ompundja Constituency).
