THE impact of a high speed head-on collision between a sedan vehicle and a heavy transport truck caused both vehicles to burst into flames and resulted in the driver of the smaller vehicle being burned beyond recognition.
The accident occurred earlier on Friday afternoon on the main road between the Hosea Kutako International Airport and Witvlei in the vicinity of the Seeis turn-off to the east of Windhoek.
Although the actual cause of the crash will have to be determined by a police investigation one of the first responders on the scene of the accident said that the smaller vehicle was driving at a very high speed when collision occurred. It is further alleged that the car was on the wrong side of the road when it hit the truck.
The driver of the smaller vehicle, who is suspected to have died on impact, was trapped in the burning wreck.
The driver of the truck managed to escape the wreckage of his vehicle before it also burst into flames. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital in Windhoek.
Like the smaller vehicle the truck and the front part of the interlinked trailer was completely destroyed by the flames.
