The Ondonga legal battle all set to continue

Placido Hilukilwa
IT was only a matter of hours after Urban and Rural Development Minister, Peya Mushelenga announced his decision to approve the application of Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo as the new head of the Ondonga Traditional Community, before the legal representatives of the other claimant, Konis Eino Kalenga, reacted by asking the minister to reverse his decision or face an urgent court interdict.
Both Kalenga and Nangolo are members of the Ondonga Royal Clan and each was designated by one of two opposed factions to succeed late King Immanuel Elifas who passed away earlier this year.
The two claimants sent their respective applications for recognition by Government and Minister Mushelenga announced his decision on Monday the 10th of June.
The Shikongo Law Chambers, Kalenga’s legal representatives reacted promptly by addressing a letter to Minister Mushelenga demanding that he reverse his decision and threatening to take their application to court should the minister fail to satisfy their client’s demands.
The leadership and legal squabbling in Ondonga started in three years ago when King Elifas allegedly suspended and eventually dismissed a number of senior and junior traditional councillors, but those dismissed by the decree, challenged the royal decision in court and the case was still pending in the High Court when King Elifas passed away.
