The two-year-old Laimi Ndandlepo Shimakeleni drowned in a dam near her homestead at Iikango Village in Ongwediva constituency after her caretaker left to visit a cuca shop.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the region, Sergeant Frieda Shikole said the incident occurred at around 19:00 on Tuesday while the caretaker was out of the house.
According to Shikole the caretaker left the toddler with other children and went to a nearby cuca shop.
“It is alleged that the toddler and the other children were playing near the dam and that she fell into the water and drowned,” she said.
Next of kin has been informed and police investigation into the matter continues.
