A JOYOUS farewell celebration for a close friend ended as a night of horror for a 23-year-old Mariental woman after she woke up with an unknown man sexually assaulting her inside a moving taxi.
According to the Namibian police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Pendukeni Haikali, the incident happened on 20 July between 02h00 and 03h00 behind the NamPower Station, near the railway line.
It is alleged that the victim was at a farewell party at a house in Aimablaagte location, Mariental, and thereafter went to Club Vegas for the after party.
The victim, however, suspects that her drink might have been spiked because she only recalls waking up in a moving white sedan after the club.
The victim further reported that when she gained consciousness, an unknown suspect was busy raping her in the backseat, while another unidentified man was driving the vehicle.
Police investigations continue.
In another rape incident at Mariental, a 26-year-old woman was on Friday night raped in a riverbed near Short Meme’s House in the Takarania neighbourhood of the southern town.
It is alleged that the victim was drinking at the Casablanca Bar and was seen in the company of the suspect. The victim allegedly left the bar to go home and the suspect followed her to her family’s house but along the way she decided to go into a friend’s house to relieve herself.
According to the report, the suspect, who was waiting for, pushed the victim down and raped her in the riverbed near the friend’s house.
Although the suspects in both incidents are known to the police, no arrests have been made.

The incident allegedly took place on Friday, 19 July, at around 19h50.
The deceased, identified as Elago Joseph, 27, succumbed to injuries at the Rundu State Hospital.
It is alleged that the deceased’s female colleague’s phone was grabbed by one of the suspects who ran away with it, prompting the deceased to give chase.
When he caught up with the suspect, however, a friend of the thief approached him from behind and shot him in an attempt to free his co-suspect.
