Women’s cricket readies for world stage

Aili Iilonga
THE Namibian Women’s cricket team is aware of the pressure that awaits it at the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers, in which it will be up against tough opposition.
Despite this, the team is determined to secure a spot as one of the final two in order to qualify for the 2020 Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup.
Namibia qualified for the T20 World Cup Qualifiers, which will be held in Scotland from 27 August till 7 September, by virtue of Zimbabwe having its membership suspended by the ICC over political interference.
“The ICC has decided to maintain the balance of regional representation in the global qualifying events and as such Namibia steps into the frame by virtue of their finishing spot in the Africa regional pathway having lost the final of the women’s African Qualifier to Zimbabwe,” ICC stated in its report.
Head coach of the Namibia women’s cricket team, Leonard Nhamburo, says the team is up for the challenge in its games against the likes of Scotland, USA, Papa New Guinea, Bangladesh, Thailand, Netherlands and Ireland, all of which are vying for the remaining two spots.
“We are happy to go and be part of that event as it is everyone’s goal to take part in the world cup qualifiers. The team is equally happy and it has learnws that whatever tournament or games you play, always play at your best and bring good results,” he said.
Nhamburo added that qualifying for the T20 World Cup qualifiers has added on more pressure and expectation to perform.
“It being the world cup global qualifiers, that is pressure alone, but we are not worried much about that. Our goal is to qualify for the world cup. We are not going to be push overs,” he said.
