A 30-year-old woman was washed away yesterday afternoon at Otjiwarongo while attempting to cross a heavy flowing riverbed with three other women.
The deceased, identified as Elise Shaafooli, was coming from work at the Omakara (Charcoal) farm, when she and her colleagues tried to cross the flooded riverbed on the outskirts of Otjiwarongo.
The other three women were rescued, but Shafooli was washed away.
“All the women were returning home from work. Since the river was still flowing heavy, effort to try and rescue proved futile and due to darkness, the search was aborted. The search was to continue this morning after the flow subsided to retrieve the female presumed dead,” said Inspector Maureen Mbeha, Namibian Police Spokesperson in the Otjozondjupa Region.
Shafooli’s body was found next to the riverbed close to the military base today.
Mbeha warned residents of Otjiwarongo and the Otjozondjupa region to refrain from walking or driving through floods to avoid incidents of a similar nature.
