TWO people were killed and two more were seriously injured as a result of two separate motor vehicle accidents that occurred on Wednesday on different roads leading to Kalkfeld.
In the first incident the driver of a Volkswagen Amarok died instantly after a head-on crash with a vehicle driven by tourists from Germany on the gravel road between Outjo and Kalkfeld. The accident occurred about ten kilometres outside Outjo.
The German tourists sustained serious injuries and were entrapped in the wreck of their self drive touring vehicle. Hydraulic rescue equipment had to be used to free the tourists from the wreck in order for them to be transported to the hospital in Outjo. The injured foreign visitors were later referred to the Katutura State Hospital for further emergency medical treatment.
A senior police officer at the Outjo Police Station confirmed the death of the driver and indicated that the name of the deceased person will be made available at a later stage.
During the second incident on the road between Omaruru and Kalkfeld the driver of a small transport truck sustained life threatening injuries when he drove into the back of a much slower moving low bed trailer of an abnormal load truck.
According to the Erongo Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the driver of the smaller truck was transported to the Omaruru State Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
The victim, however, succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival at the hospital.
