EIGHT school children sustained minor injuries when the bus they were travelling in had a partial head-on collision with a truck transporting live stock on the outskirts of Windhoek.
According to the incident report provided by the Public Relations Division of the Namibian Police the crash occurred at about 17:30 between Kappsfarm and Windhoek on Saturday afternoon.
“It is alleged that bus belonging to the Namibian Government collided side-on with a truck transporting cattle. The impact caused the truck to overturn on a steep slope on the side of the road.”
The bus was transporting 63 learners and two teachers from Hino Primary School in the Gobabis area and was on its way back when the two vehicles that were travelling in opposite directions collided.
Besides the eight children that were injured, the driver of the truck sustained serious injuries and had to be transported to the hospital by an ambulance for emergency medical care.
Several heads of cattle were died and the injured animals had to be killed to spare them from suffering.
The police in the Khomas Region registered a case of reckless and negligent driving and are still investigating the actual cause of the incident.
Albertina Joel (age unknown) were killed during a hit and run accident in Lüderitz on Friday evening and the police are looking for the driver who fled the scene of the incident.
According to the report about the incident the deceased person was walking along a street in the harbour town when she was struck by car. She died on the scene of the accident.
The driver of the car that struck the victim fled the scene of the accident and the police have started a search for the culprit.
In a separate incident on Saturday the 20-year-old Reginald Nero died on the scene of an accident near the turn-off to the Naute Dam near Keetmanshoop.
According to the incident report the vehicle in which Nero was a passenger overturned next to the road after the driver lost control.
The driver and another occupant of the car sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital in Keetmanshoop.
Their condition was described as critical and the cause of the accident still has to be determined by an investigation.
